In Korea there's a gray list for schools. There should really be something like that for Japan. I don't think teachers generally go to Japan in search of a disorganized school, in the countryside, with lots of driving and no night life, and a contract that has more loop holes than all the six flags parks put together.
It's about time the teachers who are fed up with being treated poorly because we have no legal protection did something about the bad businessmen.
We may not have it as bad as our students, but the experience of living in Japan shouldn't include the worst job of one's life.

After this I am going to attempt to change the title of this blog. I don't know what the legal ramifications of making a gray list for Japan will be. Maybe that's why I couldn't find any when I was looking for a job.

To me, the key bit is this: "Armed with slick websites and flashy recruiting videos, big chains such as Aeon, Gaba and ECC send recruiters to Australasia, North America and Britain to attract fresh graduates." By doing so, the employers expand the pool of workers to a point where progress on wages, hours and conditions is very difficult. As the article later states, "As long as there are people willing to take a leap and see what Japan holds for them, there will be employers willing to exploit that desire." By the time a fresh "exploitee" figures out what is really going on, many decide it is time to take the path of least resistance and leave Japan. ("If a teacher stays for a year or two, as most do, they can afford a ticket home and again, not much more.")
There are several consequences of this system. First, it serves to confirm the image of foreign teachers as "temporary, transient workers". As the article points out, that is "a self-fulfilling prophecy" in that it is a direct consequence of the intent of many of the recruiters. Another consequence, not directly mentioned in the article, is that this dilutes the "will to organize" by ensuring that some part of the workforce will lack the resources and desire to challenge the current system of employment.
Finally, the dire conditions that prevail within the eikaiwa industry establish the social environment within which the ripples of this system impact other foreign workers, especially in the post-secondary area. Highly experienced teachers with masters degrees generally must choose between long-term low wage and no benefit part time positions or time limited (often three year) full time contracts that absolutely preclude any possibility of advancement and keep teachers perpetually in "job seeker" status. Changes in labor laws effective in April 2013 seek to improve the condition of long-term part time workers. Significantly, the only major industry that has reacted negatively to those changes is higher education. Rather than respecting the spirit of the law, many universities reacted by changing their system for part-time teachers to circumvent the new provisions.

Radiation is a scary thing. You can’t see it, you can’t taste it, you can’t feel it, but we all know exposure can cause cancer. So how much danger do we face from the crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant?
The Japanese government on April 12 made a somewhat confusing statement regarding the plant; they said the situation was coming under control and there was very little risk of a catastrophic meltdown with large release of radioactive material, but they lifted the crisis rating for the accident to 7 – the highest level and equal to Chernobyl- and widened the exclusion zone around the plant because of fears of long-term health effects.
They said they expected the radiation in the current 20 km exclusion zone will reach the equivalent of 20 millisieverts a year, but this may extend to some areas as far as 30 km or more from the plant, depending on wind and water run-off.
Doctor MITA Shigeru, who recently moved to Okayama-city, Okayama prefecture, to open a new clinic there, wrote a short essay in the newsletter published by Association of Doctors in Kodaira, metropolitan Tokyo.
Although the target readers for this essay were not the general public, it has been cited in a weekly e-mail magazine published by journalist KINOSHITA Kouta, who has been organizing actions to urge people to leave radiation affected areas (including Tokyo) since 3.11, 2011.
On many occasions, public talks and gatherings, both Dr. Mita and Mr. Kinoshita have acknowledged the danger of radiation and they have called out for immediate action for radiation protection.
In November 2013, WNSCR translated an essay that Dr. Mita wrote for parents concerned about radiation: (Please read the article here). Despite the interests of many parents in Japan, there are very few doctors who show serious concern on the issues of radiation, and commenting on the issue publicly is even rarer.

I closed the clinic in March 2014, which had served the community of Kodaira for more than 50 years, since my father’s generation, and I have started a new Mita clinic in Okayama-city on April 21.
I had been a member of the board of directors in the Kodaira medical association since the 1990’s, the time I started practicing medicine at my father’s clinic. For the last 10 years, I had worked to establish a disaster emergency response in the city.
In Tokyo, the first mission of the disaster response concerns how to deal with earthquakes.
In the event of a South Eastern Earthquake, which is highly expectable, it is reasonable to assume a scenario of meltdown in the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka prefecture, followed by radiation contamination in Tokyo.
I have been worried about the possibility of radiation contamination in Tokyo, so I had repeatedly requested the medical association, the municipal government and the local public health department to stock medical iodine. However, every time my request was turned down; the reason given was that Tokyo did not expect such an event. Hence there was no plan for preparing for the event.
In the afternoon of March 11, 2011, Tokyo experienced slow but great motions in the earthquake. I thought, “now this is what’s called long-period seismic motions. The South Eastern Sea earthquake, with the following Hamaoka NPP accident, are finally coming”. Instead, the source of the earthquake was in Tohoku. The temperature of the reactors in Fukushima Daiichi NPP rose and it caused massive explosions, followed by meltdowns and melt-through.
It is clear that Eastern Japan and Metropolitan Tokyo have been contaminated with radiation.
Contamination of the soil can be shown by measuring Bq/kg. Within the 23 districts of Metropolitan Tokyo, contamination in the east part is 1000-4000 Bq/kg and the west part is 300-1000 Bq/kg. The contamination of Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine, is 500 Bq/kg (Ce137 only). West Germany after the Chernobyl accident has 90 Bq/kg, Italy has 100 and France has 30 Bq/kg on average. Many cases of health problems have been reported in Germany and Italy. Shinjuku, the location of the Tokyo municipal government, was measured at 0.5-1.5 Bq/kg before 2011. Kodaira currently has 200-300 Bq/kg contamination.
I recommend all of you to watch the NHK program, “ETV special: Chernobyl nuclear accident: Report from a contaminated land”, which is available on Internet. I think it is important to acknowledge what people who visited Belarus and Ukraine, and heard the stories of the locals, have seen and felt there, and listen to those who served in rescue operations in Chernobyl in the past more than 20 years.

OK I noticed this effect within the first couple months, but didn't want to say anything, out of politeness and 'getting my bearings'. I wanted to give myself some time to observe and avoid empty generalizations. But, now I feel pretty confident in saying that there is something seriously amiss about most of the foreigners here.

I think I am paying the price of going to Akiba last Saturday with out an umbrella and getting my feet soaked...I have a cold...and it sucks..it started about Thursday/Friday and I wanted to goto Harajuku today (Sunday) but I just didn't really feel up to it. But yesterday I wanted to get some exercise so I headed to Shinjuku, walked to Harajuku and walked around Yoyogi park. The park was big, at the front gates where where Bikers and skateboarders doing there thing. I was relived that there where so many bathrooms around(pun intended) I also spotted some water fountains( the kind the shoot high in the air, not the ons you drink from, although I also saw lots of those), So of course I need to take photos of them, I manly waked around the main walk way of the park, next time I 'll have to explore the park a bit more. There was a lot of the park I had yet to check out. I didn't check out the park more because I was sick. It just leaves me with ore exploring to do next time.
To counter the cold I have been OD on vitamin C and drinking lots of water and eating healthier. I wasn't felling so good this morning, but now I feel fine, cept I kind of over ate and now I now I feel over stuffed.
So what did I do today?
Well other than try to get better, I cleaned my room, organized my figures, and take some photo shots of Sofie and did some of my laundry, I am going to go to bed soon, I need lots of sleep. Monday I am going to try to pay my rent, and if I am up to it I might just check out Shibuya, and Tokyo hands in Shinjuku, in the time square, close to the station.
Also I have learned how to resize muti-photos in Photoshop Elements, so I don't have to use the other program to resize photos, which is good, since the trial has expired on it.

I wholeheartedly disagree. It’s not that Vietnamese educators and parents are racist for overtly discriminating against Asian teachers. They just understand that their kids have a lot to learn from white losers.
In her piece Ms. Omar describes a Filipino teacher with a four-year degree in education, an English teaching certification, and a tough time finding a job. Meanwhile, she asserts that “any white person with a pulse and a degree” can net an English teaching job in Vietnam.
Hey. That’s just simply not true. It takes a bold, visionary type of white person to come over here and teach, especially those of us who have no background in education or formal training.

Reason 1: Ineffective English Education.
Although Japanese students learn English for six years (starting the first year of junior high school), many of them still can’t communicate in even basic English. This is because the English education in Japanese schools is mainly geared towards helping the students to pass the written university entrance exams.
Japanese students who want to get into national universities have to do well on the “center” exams that are administered throughout Japan once a year. The center exams do not test communication skills, only writing and grammar. Thus the students spend hours memorizing complex English grammar rules but never spend anytime actually using English to communicate.

North Korea has test-fired a new anti-ship cruise missile, images released by state media on Saturday showed, demonstrating the increased capability of the secretive state's outdated navy.
The images were released in the lead-up to U.S.-South Korean military exercises this spring. North Korea routinely seeks to raise tensions ahead of the annual drills, although this year Pyongyang has also offered to suspend nuclear testing if Washington calls off the exercises.
The images, which were shown on the front page of the ruling Workers' Party Rodong Sinmun newspaper, showed leader Kim Jong Un observing the missile being fired from a small naval vessel.
State media described it as a "new type of cutting-edge anti-ship rocket" developed by North Korean scientists that will "bring a great change in the navy's defense of territorial waters".
The missile appeared identical in design to a Russian anti-ship missile, the KH-35, which is capable of flying at high speeds meters above the sea.
"It looks exactly like a KH-35," said Jeffrey Lewis of the California-based Monterey Institute of International Studies.
Last June, Lewis was the first to spot what appeared to be an unconfirmed glimpse of the missile in a North Korean propaganda video."It is a capable anti-ship cruise missile that puts some teeth in recent statements about developing anti-ship capabilities," said Lewis, referring to North Korean naval exercises last month that state media said were designed to target U.S. aircraft carriers.
North Korea has increased the number of air and naval military drills in recent weeks, ahead of the annual U.S.-South Korean military exercises on the Korean peninsula.

Popular theories usually mention how sad the average Japanese salaryman is and the gaijin boyfriend being just a fashion accessory, free English conversation partner or novelty item for a Japanese girl to impress her friends with. Other possibilities include the Japanese girlfriend feeling freer due to not being restricted by the Japanese language (no way to say I love you in normal Japanese conversation!) and his family being several thousand miles away. I believe the main reason is that the gaijin male quickly convinces himself that he can throw off his lack of success at home, and so he does- i.e. pure self-belief. Any unusual social skills can also be passed off as being a foreigner or other cultural or language misunderstanding.
There is also the more general question of why outsiders instantly become better dating prospects in almost any society, which is possibly tied into the desireability of bringing other genes into the limited gene pools that the often isolated groups of early humans would have been.

Just last week, the Osaka Prefectural Education Committee revealed that they had terminated the services of a 45-year-old male social studies teacher at a municipal middle school in Higashiosaka, as he had been teaching for 15 years without a proper license. The man had already taught in four municipal middles schools, starting the charade 15 years ago on a forged teaching license. Apart from terminating the man, the education board is now reviewing if he can be held criminally liable for the compensation he collected during that time.
“We have never heard of an example where someone had taught for 15 years without a license,” Japan’s Ministry of Education commented on the issue. According to the Osaka committee, the forgery was only discovered because of a periodical process of renewing teachers’ licenses, and the “fake” teacher was discovered when he tried to renew his license early this year. The man had apparently forged his license by changing the name on one that he had borrowed from a friend, and then submitted it as requirement for getting a teaching job. On forged license, the man’s name and date of birth were recorded, but because the license number corresponded to a different person, the man had admitted the forgery upon questioning.
“Even though I had told those around me I was going to be a teacher, I couldn’t graduate from university,” the man admitted. “I was always on edge, wondering when I’d get caught,” he added. The Osaka education committee is now pursuing the matter of 15 years of salary that the man collected with the Osaka Prefectural Police. On the matter of graduation certificates of students who had taken this teacher’s classes, as well as the grade promotion certificates for current students of the school, the committee had decided that they were still valid.

The body of a 20 year old Japanese university student was identified by Romanian authorities on Monday, after being found in a suburb of Bucharest. The Japanese Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it is Yurika Masuno, a sophomore from Tokyo’s University of the Sacred Heart, who had gone to Romania to teach Japanese as part of an internship. Police have already arrested a suspect who was seen interacting with Masuno on security camera footage from the Bucharest Otopeni International Airport.
26 year old Vlad Nicolae, a native of the Romanian capital city, was arrested on Saturday but denies his involvement in the murder. Police say the security camera footage shows Nicolae approaching Yurika Masuno at the airport shortly after her arrival, and then getting into a taxi with her. The taxi reportedly went several kilometers in the opposite direction of where Masuno needed to go. It is then believed that Nicolae raped and strangled the girl in the woods not far from the road. Investigators believe the young man spoke english to the Japanese girl and lured her into riding with him by saying that he would help accompany her to where she needed to go.
While it certainly seems the element of a naive young girl in a foreign country was part of what happened, it is also truly sad that the internship organization scheduled her travel in such a poor way. She was traveling alone and had to go through areas that were known not to be safe after dark. Her internship was arranged by AIESEC Japan, the country’s division of a nonprofit youth organization that offers programs in 110 countries.

Mr. and Mrs. Horiguchi are the greatest employers ever!
